Dear Mr. Friedel:
I particularly regret having to write this letter because we
were all very much impressed with Lance both as a youngster and as
a studant. Consequently, we feel that he is well qualified and wish
that we could have him with us next year.
We do not, however, feel that we are qualified. After extensive
consideration of our students, faculty, and facilities, and the ways
in which we might make modifications in them to accommodate Lance, we
have come to the conclusion that we are simply unable to afford him
what he needs.
Since we cannot provide the proper school situation for Lance,
I wish that I could come up with suggestions as to where you mi$ht
findhelp. I certainly cannot suggest anything in this area. I
know that you do not wish to send Lance away to school, and I am
completely in sympathy with that feeling; however, I think something
in the nature of Sands Point would provide the only real answers.
I have never, since coming to Moses Brown, had to write a letter
like this before. It is dismaying to have to do so now, but it is
the most honest appraisal that we can offer.
Sincerely yours,
Donald R. Gardner, Jr.
