vita, MARIE FRIEDEL.
1. Studied intensely in the field of gifted and creative children
for the past 19 years.
2. In cooperation with Mr. Friedel I started a Creativity Learning Center in the basement of our home in 1967. Dr. Roberta
Kellogg worked closely with us as our educational consultant.
3. I have traveled extensively to Conferences all over the nation
which enabled me to make direct contact with most of the lead-
ing experts in the field.
4. Because of my recognized expertise in the field of the gifted,
I accepted requests to take part in national as well as local
advisory committees.
5. Founded the RI Chapter for The National Association for Gifted
Children in 1967. I met with their Board in the state of CT
and conferred with them regarding the present on-going neglect
of gifted children.
"The following motion was made and passed
unanimously: We endorse the principle that gifted children
should not be an educationally deprived segment of society, and
that this situation should be ameliorated by all possible means."
6. Founded the National Foundation for Gifted and Creative Children
in 1969. Our organization is listed in various , journals that
are Resource Guides for the Gifted. One of these journals is
from the RI Department of Education -- 1978. Our office re-
ceives hundreds of inquiries from all over the nation and world.
I have been informed by some of these people seeking information
that I was recommended by the US Embassy in their country.
7. I met Dr. Stanley Krippner at the 15th Annual Meeting of the
National Association for Gifted Children. This meeting took
place in Chicago in 1968. Dr. Krippner agreed to become our
psychological consultant and has been very involved with us
since that date.
8. Dr. Paul Torrance works closely with us on our creativity
tests that are given to children. Both Dr. Krippner and Dr.
Torrance are contributors to the best journal published on
the gifted -- Gifted Child Quarterly.
9. Because of the extent of my work many professionals urged me
to become involved in a formal program of study. I was
accepted in the Humanistic Psychology Institute as a doctoral
candidate in the year 1973.
10. Founded the Creative Growth Center in Lincoln, RI -- 1976,
While we were not state accredited, my paper written on our
philosophy of education for the Center was approved by the
State Department of Education.
11. In 1975 my Doctoral Committee and Chair Person agreed to the
following: Marie Friedel has professional expertise in:
a. Identification of gifted and creative children.
b. Education of gifted and creative children
c. Counseling of parents of gifted and creative children.
Legal aid for gifted and creative children and children's rights.
e. Alternative educational methods for gifted and creative children.
f. Alternatives to drug therapy for children.
My dissertation will be on how creativity is stifled in the
traditional classrooms.
12. My work has received public recognition from many political
leaders and educators. I will cite only a few of these:
a. In 1966 The Governor of RI presented to us a Proclamation
Gifted Child Week -- John H. Chafee, "called upon all
Rhode Islanders to appreciate this organization and its
worthwhile goals." Another was issued by him in 1967.
b. United States Office of Education for Gifted and Talented
US Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
Dr. Harold Lyon Jr., Director
c. Certificate of Recognition, US Dept. of HEW
An award sponsored by: US department of State
Office of Education
US Commission of UNSEEN
Given on behalf of the NATIONAL RIGHT TO READ EFFORT for
ny "Contribution to the development of Literacy in the USA."
Who's Who of American Women 1977
I have many letters from the most prestigious professionals
in the field of gifted commending me on my expertise in the
area of the gifted.
15. There are hundreds of letters from parents and children thanking
me for having assisted them in overcoming many problems they had
developed as a result: of being gifted and creative. I believe that
the work I have done for these youngsters and their families is
the most visible proof of my expertise in the area of the gifted.
16. Most of the people who have come to me for assistance have been
sent by pediatricians, layers, family Doctors, psychiatrists,
teachers, professors, social workers, children's advocates, and
by the Family Court judges and other Court personnel. Some of the
people who have sought my counsel are professors and psychologists
as well as Drs. who have children in trouble. Among, these people
are professionals employed by our Institutes of Higher Education
in RI as well as from other states.
17. I cannot name the exact number of children and families we
have helped. Of course there are those we were unable to
help. It would take time to check the files to give a precise
number -- however, we can very safely say that there are several
hundred children involved since we started our work. Not all
of these children come from this state. I have testified in
many cases in Family Court. At one time I provided counsel for
a couple of severe cases and there were quite a number of children
I appeared in court for when there was no lawyer. When there
were lawyers, I was often urged to obtain transcripts of the
proceedings. The different lawyers were impressed with the "accolades"
they felt the Family Court Judges had given me:,
18. At this time I am not going into other areas of how I have made
contributions that have resulted in helping children. There is
a very long list which covers many, many years of intense in-
/ volvement.
Again, I feel compelled to point out that the proof of whether
or not I have expertise in the education and psychology of the
gifted is not all that I have studied -- but how this body of
knowledge has aided me in living application to help many, many
children and their parents. Inert knowledge is not useful.
Respectfully Submitted
Marie Friedel
