How can you tell if your child is gifted?

Every parent at some point during early years development must have wondered whether their child is gifted.  It is natural for a parent to think that their child is possibly more gifted or creative than one of their piers of whom is the same age.  There are many sites on the internet which offer guidance as to whether or not a child is gifted.  There are various areas in which a child could be gifted for instance one child could be gifted in say reading and be an avid reader, another child could be talented in art and drawing.

gifted childIf you think that your child has a particular talent for art for their age then there are some characteristics to be aware of, if your child can draw a variety of items, the drawing should show that a child has planned and the child should be drawing with proportion and depth in their work, the child will usually take art seriously and enjoy art a subject, the child would have no fear of trying out new art materials and would pursue art as a hobby at home.  The same goes for if you think you have a child who has a good musical ability, they too will demonstrate traits such as good co-ordination and rhythm, shows that they have a good memory for tones and uses music as a way of expressing themselves, a child who is gifted in music usually also likes dancing and drama.

If you have a gifted child then school age is usually the time when this is picked up, schools usually have a screening programme which deciphers whether or not a child is gifted, this is put in place by schools to ensure that a child is receiving the right sort of education for their ability, and it also allows for the parents of a gifted child to get good support in place.

There are some ways in which a parent can tell if their child is gifted, there are some basic observations that if made by a parent when the child is young enables a parent to have a child tested before reaching school age.

If your child reads before five years old, talks to adults and older children with ease, has a vivid imagination, is opinionated, has the ability to memorise objects and details, asks many questions, is critical of themselves and often sees themselves as different from their piers, understands well adult conversation and stores and ‘gets’ adult jokes, knows what is right and wrong and often over compensates for each, has trouble focusing at school, speech wise is very well developed.

However just because your child demonstrates most of these traits does not necessarily mean that they are gifted, if you think that you may have a gifted child then it is always worth getting this checked out with a professional body.
