ADHD and Creative and
Gifted Children
ADHD or Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is known to
start in early years development. A lot of people in the
past believed that children who had this disorder were just
naughty and misbehaving, but a child who suffers from this sort
of disorder genuinely does have an inability to concentrate or
focus on a particular task in hand. In schools these
children will be seen to be disruptive in class. It is
thought that around five percent of the population suffer from
ADHD, and most probably go through life without getting the
correct diagnosis to this disorder.
Hyperactivity is one of the signs that a person
may have ADHD, and distraction is another symptom, if a
person with ADHD is not interested in a topic of
discussion there concentration will waver very easily,
thus making mistakes in school. Mood swings are a
common finding in a person with ADHD as they find it very
difficult to remember things (such as school work in a
youngster, and may be every day stuff in adults such as
remembering to do the washing or paying a
bill). Sleep too can be difficult for a
child or an adult with ADHD. Children often find it
difficult to sit still or play quietly, the word no can
often cause problems with these children as they don’t
understand often when to stop.
In the last ten years or so ADHD has been recognised as a
condition for which adults and children need treatment.
It is important that a child with this condition gets the
correct diagnosis early enough to ensure that they are helped
through there education, as many sufferers suffer when it comes
to undertaking educational tasks in school, and concentration
is a big effort for most people who suffer from ADHD. There
are many adults and children who suffer from ADHD that are
creative and gifted in other areas. There are also many
famous people who although suffering from have made it
big. Bill Cosby born in 1937 and is famous for a whole
host of shows which have been aired on television, and has
dedicated most of his life to making people laugh. Jim
Carey, who is known to play wacky characters in films has made
a good living despite having ADHD, it has gone for him rather
than against him, as characters like Ace Ventura Jim Carey was
able to express his hyperactive side more than ever.
Other famous people include actors, artists, entrepreneurs,
inventors and scholars to name but a few.
People with ADHD are given guidance when it comes to
everyday life and living with this disorder. As
demonstrated by many famous people who have ADHD and have made
a very tidy living doing what they love, ADHD should not hold a
person back, it should encourage them to do more.
